What Are Fingerprint Biometric Systems?

There are several fingerprint biometric systems that are prevalent across the world today because fingerprint biometric systems are considered to be the oldest as well as the most trusted security parameter that works across so many applications with a lot of reliability. We all are aware that every person in this world has unique fingerprints which normally comprises a series of incomprehensibly varied little lines or ridges and some odd looking furrows. What this means is that no two human beings on earth would have the same set of patterns when we look at the patterns that are defined by the ridges and furrows combined with the minutiae points. You must be wondering what minutiae points are. This just refers to some of the characteristics of  local ridge lines which may be seen located at the end portion of a ridge or where there is a clear instance of a ridge bifurcation.

Fingerprint matching techniques are very popular so let’s understand the two categories that it mainly comprises namely, minutiae-based and correlation based.

When we talk about minutiae-based techniques, the idea is to locate minutiae points which can then be mapped around the relative placement around the finger but still, there are a few problems that are associated with this approach such as extraction of the minutiae points in an accurate way can’t be done if the fingerprint shows low quality and low clarity. Another limitation associated with this method is that the distinct global pattern comprising its set of ridges and furrows isn’t taken into consideration.

The correlation-based method seems a more reasonable and sensible method as it doesn’t have too much difficulty to overcome a lot of the difficulties that we find is inherent with the minutiae-based approach.  However, this means that we have to still watch out to understand its own shortcomings. There are a lot of correlation-based techniques that require you to pinpoint the exact location where the first registration point is shown. This is a fact to be kept in consideration because it means it is affected by image rotations as well as translation.

It is equally important for us to know that there are large volumes of fingerprints that are being collected and stored every single day for a vast range of applications such as access control or forensics or driver license registration and much more. When we want to understand the scope of biometric technology, it is equally important to understand how far and wide the reaches of fingerprint biometric systems are.

However, a lot of havoc was created in the realm of biometric technology when a Japanese researcher declared last year that he had no difficulty to create fingerprints that were fake by simply using gelatin material.

These little quirks will keep coming up which is why finger print biometric systems will continue to grow.
